June 9, 2009 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release

The Birmingham Barons moved closer to a second-straight, first-half division title Monday night, pounding out 17 hits en route to a 14-8 win over Montgomery at Regions Park.

Brandon Allen led the way with his third four-hit performance, a 4-for-4 job including a solo home run in the third inning. The slugging first baseman added three total RBI on the night.

Stefan Gartrell and David Cook added four RBI a piece. Gartrell pushed across his team-high 40^th RBI with a two-run double in the first inning and a two-run triple in the eighth inning. Cook crushed his team-leading 12^th home run, a two-run blast in the third inning.

Brian Omogrosso (6-2, 4.50) picked up his sixth win on a night when he clearly didn't have his best stuff. The right-hander got through the first two innings by retiring the side in order, but came unhinged in the third inning. He allowed two runs oin two runs on three hits in the inning before allowing five more runs on six hits in the fourth inning. Omogrosso lasted the minimum five innings to earn the win. He allowed seven earned runs and 10 hits while striking out four and walking two batters.

The win gives the Barons at 9-0-3 in series this season and 6-0-0 at home.

Coupled with the BayBears loss Monday night, the Barons magic number to clinch their second-straight South Division title is seven.

The Barons and the Biscuits will close out their five-game series Tuesday night. Kyle McCulloch will look to become the fourth pitcher in the Southern League with at least six victories. Fellow Barons Lucas Harrell (7-2), John Ely (6-1) and Omogrosso are the other three.

The Barons will hold a diamond dig following Tuesday night's game. Jewelwer's 3 has provided multiple pieces of jewelry that will be buried in the infield dirt. The first 500 women to enter Regions Park will be eligible to sign up for the contest.
