Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI -- Houston Astros closer Jose Valverde, working his way back from a strained right calf injury, will pitch twice this week at Whataburger Field during the Hooks' series with Texas League South Division leader Midland.
Valverde, 31, is scheduled to work an inning in relief on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Both games begin at 7:05.
Valverde has been on the disabled list since April 27. He threw 40 pitches in two innings of a simulated game prior to Sunday's contest between the Astros and Pittsburgh Pirates at MinuteMaidPark. Houston officials are pointing to a Friday, June 12 series opener at Arizona for Valverde's return.
The resident of Altos de Arroyo Hondo in the Dominican Republic converted 44 of 51 save opportunities in his first season as an Astro last year. He led MLB with 47 saves for the Diamondbacks in 2007. Valverde's 144 saves in 169 chances are fourth all-time among Dominican-born pitchers.
