Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Taylor Grote and Melky Mesa each belted home runs and closer Pat Venditte earned his league-best 13th save as the Charleston RiverDogs stalled the Bowling Green Hot Rods, 4-1, in South Atlantic League action Monday in front of 2,253 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
With the win, the RiverDogs leap to 24-20 on the season and jump into a first-place tie while the Hot Rods slide to 23-21.
Charleston apprehended a 3-0 lead in the third inning when Abraham Almonte reached on a dropped fly ball by center fielder Anthony Scelfo. After stealing third, Almonte scored when Dan Brewer smacked a double to right. Mesa followed with his league- leading 11th home run, a two-run bomb over the right field fence.
The RiverDogs tacked on an additional run in the fourth to extend Charleston's lead to 4-0 when Grote smacked the first pitch of the inning over the right field wall for a solo blast. It was Grote's third home run of the season.
Bowling Green cut into Charleston's 4-1 lead in the sixth when Mike Sheridan hammered his fifth home run of the season over the right field fence.
Venditte, professional baseball's lone ambidextrous pitcher, earned the save when he struck out the Hot Rods in order, one left-handed and two right, in the ninth.
RiverDogs starter David Phelps (4-1) earned the victory as he allowed one run on five hits while striking out three and walking three. Cory Arbiso also threw two complete frames and allowed one hit while striking out two.
Hot Rods starter Michael Jarman suffered the loss, dropping his record to 3-3. In the process, he went four innings and allowed all four runs on four hits while walking two and striking out six. Knuckleballer Diego Echeverria pitched the final four innings and fanned two while walking a pair.
Bowling Green got six hits on the night with Tim Beckhan pacing the team with a pair. The RiverDogs secured only four hits on the night and no one secured more than one.
Charleston manager Torre Tyson will give the ball to 6-10 righty Andrew Brackman (1-4, 3.55 ERA) while Bowling Green manager and RiverDog alum Matt Quatraro opposes with southpaw Matt Moore (2-2, 3.90 ERA).
