Salem, VA (May 17, 2009)- With a little luck, a few clutch hits, and some dominant relief pitching, the Red Sox battled back for a second straight day, taking Sunday's matinee over the Dash 7-5. The pivotal turning point came in the last of the sixth inning when the Red Sox had the bases loaded with nobody out, trailing 5-4. With Jon Hee at the plate, a bounding chopper to third hopped over the head of Winston-Salem third baseman Brent Morel into left field to give Salem the lead. Matt Sheely, who was at first when the play began, advanced to third on the single, then took off for home as the inbounding throw from Christian Marrero skipped away from second-baseman Dale Mollenhauer. On a bang-bang play at the plate, Sheely slid in safely, much to the dismay of Dash pitcher Henry Mabee and skipper Joe McEwing, both of whom were promptly ejected by the home plate umpire Stu Scheurwater. The Red Sox led 7-5, the Dash lost their hurler and manager, and the Sox would be in control the rest of the way.

Lost in the wacky four-run sixth inning that included two errors and a walk along with three base hits was a sensational effort by the Salem bullpen, which allowed just one hit over five shutout innings. Robert Coello struck out two in his two frames, Jason Rice recorded four Ks and retired all six batters he faced, and Derrick Loop served up his fifth save with a smooth ninth. Although starter Eammon Portice struggled over four innings, the Red Sox got Portice off the hook with the rally in the sixth. Portice yielded five runs on eight hits over the course of his outing, walking two and striking out a pair as well.

Winston-Salem scored one in the first and three more in the second to jump out 4-0 in support of Dash starter Johnnie Lowe, who lasted five innings and allowed three runs. The Dash totaled seven hits over the first two innings to score the quartet of runs, but they would be limited to just two hits over the final seven frames. CJ Lang led the Dash with three hits and two RBI, while Dale Mollenhauer went 2-4 with an RBI for a Winston club that fell two and a half games out of first place with the loss.

The Sox, meanwhile, struck back with two runs off Lowe in the third, and another tally crossed in the fourth when Zak Farkes' solo homer cleared the wall in left. Farkes and Hee each recorded multiple hits for the Sox, while Luis Segovia went 1-4 with a couple runs scored. The Red Sox, winners of five of their last seven, improved to 20-17 and moved two and half games ahead of the Dash and the Indians.

Salem will open up a four-game series against the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Monday evening at Lewis-Gale Field. Everett Teaford opposes Kyle Weiland in the series lid-lifter at 7:05. Salem took two out of three from Wilmington back in April at Frawley Stadium in Delaware.
