Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals blew an 8-0 lead, but scored twice in the eighth inning, eventually holding on for a 10-9 victory over the Arkansas Travelers on Sunday afternoon at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock, Arkansas.

It's the second time in their last 11 games that the Cards let an 8-0 advantage slip away. The only difference was that this time, the offense had time to rally.

Daniel Descalso's RBI single scored Brett Wallace and Andrew Brown followed with a sac fly to put the Cards ahead to stay in the eighth inning at 10-9.

Springfield scored eight runs against Travs' starter Amalio Diaz in the first five innings, getting out of the gate to the eight-run advantage.

Mark Hamilton had a pair of home runs for Springfield, while Daniel Descalso and Steven Hill had back-to-back round-trippers for Springfield, helping to put them up comfortably.

The advantage looked like plenty for Cards' starter Lance Lynn, who was strong over five innings, but ran into trouble in the sixth.

After allowing just three singles and facing one over the minimum through five innings, Lynn had trouble getting the final out of the sixth. An error opened the door for the Travs, as they plated nine total runs in the sixth inning, seven of them coming with two outs. Trailing 8-2, Ryan Mount and Wil Ortiz had back-to-back run-scoring singles, making it an 8-5 game. Lynn would exit with two on and two away, giving way to Eddie Degerman, who struggled mightily with his command.

Degerman walked all four hitters he faced, forcing home three runs, as the Travs tied the game at 8-8. Brad Furnish followed Degerman out of the bullpen and promptly walked the first man he faced, forcing in another run to give the Travs their first lead at 9-8.

Furnish (2-0) would settle down, eventually earning the win in his first relief appearance since moving to the bullpen.

The Cards took the lead back in the eighth against Travs' reliever Ryan Brazier (2-1). Wallace opened the inning with a single, then moved to second on a walk issued to Hill. Descalso followed with the game-tying hit and Brown followed with the sac fly, putting Springfield in front to stay.

Tyler Norrick retired all six batters he faced over a much-needed, uneventful two innings of work, earning his third save of the year.

The Redbirds (17-12) are now two games up in the North Division after winning their second straight game. Brandon Dickson (2-1) will take the mound on Monday morning, as the Cards and Travs battle at 11:00am. Arkansas will go with right-hander Trevor Bell (2-1). Monday's game will be heard live on KBFL AM 1060. Online listeners can visit springfieldcardinals.com and look for the link on the home page to listen live.
