Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Mike Baxter's ground-rule double sparked a chain of six straight hits for San Antonio in the bottom of third, spurring the Missions to a 6-1 win over the Hooks Sunday to give the home team a split in the two-game series.
The result cost the Hooks (15-14) a chance to gain ground on first-place Midland, losers to Frisco Sunday afternoon. Corpus Christi remains 1½ games behind the RockHounds in the Texas League South.
Baxter's double in the third came with one out. Craig Cooper followed with a line-drive single to center that Josh Flores caught on a short hop. Baxter remained at second, since it appeared that Flores had a reasonable chance to make the catch.
Cedric Hunter's single plated Baxter for a 2-0 San Antonio lead. Singles by Anthony Contreras, Seth Johnston and Jesus Lopez brought in three more runs. Later in the frame, with the bases loaded and two outs, Mitch Canham's ground ball was misplayed by first baseman Mark Ori, allowing Johnston to score for a 6-0 Missions advantage.
The string of hits was surrendered by Hooks starter Sergio Perez, who was charged with all six runs, five earned, on 11 hits over three innings. Perez (3-2) walked one and struck out one.
Corpus Christi's only run came on Jonathan Fixler's fourth homer of the season in the fifth. The blast was the only dent on the record of Missions starter Ernesto Frieri, who gave up just five hits over six innings while striking out five. Frieri (3-1) also contributed offensively with a single and a sacrifice bunt.
The two teams travel to Whataburger Field for games Monday and Tuesday night. Casey Hudspeth (2-2, 4.91) takes on San Antonio's Stephen Faris (2-4, 5.65) in Monday's 7:05 p.m. start.
