Greenville Drive News Release
Savannah, GA - Trailing by two runs, the Drive (17-12) used a three-run seventh inning to propel themselves to a 4-3 victory over the Savannah Sand Gnats (15-13). With the win and a Lexington Legends loss, Greenville reclaimed a share of first place in the South Atlantic League's Southern Division.
After plating just one run through the first six innings against Savannah starter Jeurys Familia despite collecting seven hits, the Drive were able to get to reliever Wendy Rosa (0-1).
David Marks laced a one-out double, and Pete Hissey and Oscar Tejeda each drew walks before Tim Federowicz collected his third hit of the game, a two-run single to tie the game. Erik Turgeon then replaced Rosa, who proceeded to issue a bases loaded walk to David Mailman to give the Drive the lead.
The Drive staked a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Almanzar and Mailman hit back-to-back, two-out singles to break the scoreless tie. The lead would not last long, however, as the Sand Gnats answered for a pair of runs in the home half of the inning.
Eric Campbell drew a leadoff walk and scored as Sean Ratliff followed with a triple. Two batters later Savannah grabbed the lead on Kai Gronauer's single off Casey Kelly. The Sand Gnats increased their lead to two runs in the sixth inning when Raul Reyes singled home Jefry Marte.
While earning a no-decision, Kelly remained undefeated on the season. The right-hander allowed two runs on five hits and walk, while fanning seven in 5-2/3 innings before being relieved by Fabian Williamson (2-1).
Williamson, a southpaw, tossed the final 3-1/3 innings, striking out six Savannah batters to earn the victory.
The Drive and Sand Gnats conclude their four-game Saturday night with first pitch set for 7:05 PM at Historic Grayson Stadium. Right-hander Caleb Clay makes his second start of the season for Greenville as Savannah counters with right-hander Jeff Kaplan.
The Drive return home to Fluor Field on Monday, May 11th when they begin an eight-game homestand, beginning with the Augusta GreenJackets. Monday's game will be preceded by a BB&T Collegiate Baseball Series match-up between the Clemson Tigers and Furman Paladins at 4 PM.
