Gentry & Vallejo Lead Frisco To Series WinApril 14, 2009 - Texas League (TL) Arkansas Travelers
The Travs didn't take much advantage of Frisco starting pitcher Omar Poveda's (1-1) wildness. He walked six batters over five innings, but allowed just three base hits and two runs in earning his first double-A win. Arkansas starter Sean O'Sullivan (1-1) suffered the loss absorbing five runs in 5.2 innings on ten base hits and five strikeouts.
The Travs grabbed the lead in the second inning on a two-out RBI single from rightfielder Coby Smith. Hainley Statia followed with a hit-and-run single to left field, but Smith hesitated around second base and Dustin Majewski threw him out at third base to end the inning.
Frisco got three straight hits with one out off O'Sullivan. Vallejo's RBI single scored Marcus Lemon from third base, then as Justin Smoak struck out Vallejo swiped second base just ahead of catcher Flint Wipke's throw while Gentry stole home giving Frisco a 2-1 lead.
Poveda gave the Travelers chances in the third and fourth innings walking two batters each frame. Mark Trumbo lined out to end the third, while Ryan Mount was caught stealing second base in the fourth inning and Hainley Statia grounded out leaving Smith aboard.
Leading off the fifth inning, Frisco catcher Manny Pina singled and was bunted to second base by Marcus Lemon. Gentry bunted off the third-base bag for a single and Vallejo singled to left bringing in Pina. Smoak's sacrifice fly scored Gentry for a 4-1 Frisco lead.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, Peter Bourjos walked and advanced to third when Wilberto Ortiz singled. All the Travs could muster though was an RBI groundout by designated hitter Hank Conger, as Poveda whiffed Trumbo for the third out.
O'Sullivan exited in the sixth inning after allowing three base hits including an RBI single by Pina giving Frisco a 5-2 lead.
Arkansas reliever Jeremy Hill allowed two runs in the seventh inning on a single by Dustin Majewski for a 7-2 score.
Poveda gave way to righthander Guillermo Moscoso, who pitched two perfect innings. Righty Andrew Laughter pitched the eighth inning allowing two runs on two base hits and a walk. Ben Johnson knocked in Conger with a double past third base, and Trumbo crossed the plate on a groundout by second baseman Ryan Mount.
The Travs trailed 7-4 when Frisco used righty Jose Diaz for the ninth inning. Statia beat a grounder for a leadoff single and scored when Ortiz doubled over the head of rightfielder Steve Murphy. But with the tying run at the plate Diaz got Conger to fly to Gentry in shallow center to earn his first save.
Time of game was 3:00 and the paid attendance was 4,078.
The Travs have Wednesday off before taking to the road for the first time in 2009. They'll begin a three-game series at Midland on Thursday night with righthander Jordan Walden (0-1, 3.60) pitching the opener against righty Jared Fernandez (1-0, 0.00). First pitch will be thrown at 6:30 p.m.
