Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI -- Sergio Perez pitched six scoreless innings and Drew Locke drove in three runs as Corpus Christi spanked Northwest Arkansas 9-1 Tuesday before 5,492 at Whataburger Field.
It was the Hooks' first victory over the Naturals in nine games, dating back 364 days. Corpus Christi collected seven two-out RBIs and a season-best 12 hits.
Perez (2-0), who has allowed just one earned run in 11 innings over two starts, threw 83 pitches, 46 for strikes. He gave up five singles, walked two and struck out one. Northwest Arkansas starter Dan Cortes fell to 0-2. He lasted 3 2/3 innings and was responsible for five hits, a walk and five strikeouts.
Collin DeLome's opposite field two-out homer to left provided Corpus Christi with a 1-0 third-inning lead. It was his third round-tripper of the season and came on a 3-2 pitch.
The Hooks batted around while adding three runs in the fourth with two out. Cortes was on the verge of pitching out of a bases-loaded jam, but threw wildly to first on a comebacker off the bat of Brian Esposito. Wladimir Sutil followed with a two-run bloop single to center field. Mark Ori and Josh Flores contributed hits in the surge and Jimmy Van Ostrand was hit by a pitch.
Northwest Arkansas scratched a run across in the seventh off reliever Erick Abreu, who was pulled after walking John Suomi and Chris McConnell to open the inning. Joe Dickerson's single to left off T.J. Burton made it 4-1.
Corpus Christi snatched the run back and more for a 6-1 advantage after seven. Victor Marte surrendered one-out singles to Jhon Florentino and Ori and struck Van Ostrand with a pitch to jam the bases. Locke followed with a sacrifice fly to center field and Flores stroked an RBI single through the left side.
The Hooks erupted for three more runs in the eighth off Kyle Crist. Florentino singled to right after a Drew Meyer double down the left-field line with two out. Crist issued free passes to Ori and Van Ostrand before paying on Locke's screaming two-run single to left.
Corpus Christi travels to Tulsa Wednesday for a three-game series with the Drillers. Southpaw Polin Trinidad (0-1) faces Samuel Deduno Thursday (1-0) in a repeat of their Opening Day matchup.
