SUNRISE, Florida (Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009) - Kenny Cooper scored four second-half goals as FC Dallas cruised to a 9-0 preseason victory over Florida International University on Thursday at the Central Broward Regional Park Cricket Stadium in Sunrise, Florida.
After building a 3-0 halftime lead, FCD made six second half substitutions including Kenny Cooper, who quickly scored four goals in a 25-minute span.
Cooper's first tally came in the 58th minute when he got his head on the end of a Jamie Watson cross. Andre Rocha's free kick from 40 yards out hit the cross bar and bounced back into FCD's possession. When Watson received the ball on the left side of the field, he took it to the endline and sent it in to Cooper, who was unmarked inside the box.
The 24-year-old struck again just a minute later as a result of good buildup from the midfield, starting with Dax McCarty sending a through ball to Andre Rocha up the right flank. Rocha then hit a low cross into the box, which Jamie Watson allowed to pass through his legs to reach a wide open Cooper, who easily tapped it into the net.
Watson followed with a goal of his own two minutes later. A volley from Drew Moor ricocheted off the cross bar and bounced directly into Watson's path, who finished with a diving header from the penalty spot.
Cooper added his third in the 73rd minute after Blake Wagner whipped a left-footed cross into the 6'3 striker, who only needed to redirect the ball with his head.
Cooper's fourth goal came 10 minutes later, when he slotted home a cross from forward Sean Bucknor, who had won the ball and beat several FIU defenders to the endline, before sending it to his teammate.
Brek Shea's header off a Watson corner kick made it 9-0 with two minutes to play.
First half goals were scored by McCarty (17th minute), Peri Marosevic (24th minute), and Steve Purdy (43rd minute).
Dallas is now 3-1-1 in preseason play, including two consecutive shutouts. FCD will next face Swedish club BK Hacken on Saturday, Feb. 21 (6 p.m. CT) at the Central Broward Regional Park Cricket Stadium.
