Lexington Legends News Release
R. J. Seidel pitched seven shutout innings, and Matt Cline drove in two runs with three hits in three at-bats to lead the West Virginia Power to a 6-0 shutout of the Lexington Legends in game one of a four-game series.
West Virginia wasted no time jumping out to a lead. The Power broke through with a single run in the first inning off Lexington starting pitcher Jake Leonhardt when Eric Fryer led off the game with a home run to left field. The blast marked the second consecutive game in which the Legends' opponent led off with a home run.
The Power piled on with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Logan Schafer walked with one out in the third, and moved to third when Fryer reached on a throwing error from catcher Jonathan Fixler. Schafer then scored on Stefan Wilson's sacrifice fly.
Matt Cline led off the fourth inning with a bunt single that pitcher Jake Leonhardt fielded. Cline then moved to second on Lee Haydel's sacrifcie bunt and advanced to third when Eric Farris reached on a fielding error from second baseman Craig Corrado. West Virginia then scored its second run of the game on a sacrifice fly when Schafer flew out to center field and Cline scored.
In the fifth Anderson De La Rosa doubled to left field with two outs. Cline then drove home the fourth run of the game with a single to left field.
West Virginia stretched its lead to five runs with another run in the eighth inning. Schafer walked with one out and moved to second on Fryer's groundout. Wilson then drove the Power's fifth run home with a single to center field.
The Power added a final insurance run in the ninth inning to reach their six-run victory. Zealous Wheeler led off the inning with a walk, and moved to second on a wild pitch from Jack Tilghman. Wheeler went to third when Andrew De La Rosa grounded out and scored on a sacrifice fly from Cline.
R. J. Seidel earned the win with seven shutout innings. Seidel struck out five and walked two in his seven innings. Jake Leonhardt took his league-leading fourteenth loss after surrendering four runs on seven hits in four and two-thirds innings.
