Tourists get 2-0 win over Hickory

Hickory, NC - Jeffrey Cunningham smacked his 17th homerun of the season to give the Tourists a 2-0 win over Hickory on Saturday nigh from L.P. Frans Stadium. Asheville (81-51) was held scoreless up until Cunningham delivered his first homerun since coming off the DL on August 9th with a strained muscle. Shane Lindsay pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out seven in his fifth start of the year for the Tourists. Edgmer Escolona, Craig Baker and Randal Taylor combined to keep Hickory scoreless and record Asheville's 11th shutout of the season.

Lindsay allowed six hits and two walks to go with his seven strikeouts. Lindsay was aided by catcher beau Seabury to keep Hickory shutout. Seabury threw out three runners working behind the plate and also singled in the contest. Seabury has now thrown our over 50% of base runners this season. Edgemer Escolona entered the game with runners on first and second and two outs in the fifth inning. Tom Hagan then singled toward center and Helder Velazquez made a diving stop to keep the game scoreless and load up the bases.

Escolona, who had allowed two grand slams in the West Virginia series, then got the next batter to strikeout and strand the bases loaded. Escolona (5-1) picked up the win with 2 2/3 innings and five strikeouts. Craig Baker and Randal Taylor finished out the game to preserve the shutout. Taylor recorded his 31st save of the season. With the win Asheville surpassed the 80 wins they had last year and still have eight contests left in the regular season.

Bruce Billings will get the ball on Sunday for a 5:05 game time. The Tourists have two road games remaining on the season before finishing the regular season with a six game homestand against Greenville and Augusta. Sunday's game can be heard on WRES FM 100.7 or online at www.milb.com
