Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Pelicans (10-8) were energized by an outstanding start from Chris Vines en route to a 5-2 victory over the Wilmington Blue Rocks in the series finale at BB&T Coastal Field.
The Pelicans finally exerted some offensive firepower in the bottom of the fourth to break a scoreless game. Willie Cabrera whistled a line shot into center field that made its way to the wall for a standup triple. One batter later, Eric Campbell hit a sacrifice fly ball to center to score Cabrera. Then, Tyler Flowers and Concepcion Rodriguez combined for back-to-back doubles to right-center to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Pelicans added another run in the bottom of the fifth. First baseman Randy Gress, who was making his Pelicans debut, crushed a home run to give the Pelicans a 3-0 advantage. Gress had a memorable debut, going 2-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.
In the seventh inning, the Blue Rocks got on the board courtesy of a solo home run by Cody Strait over Land Shark Landing. The hanging breaking ball from Vines was the only blunder in his superb start.
The Pelicans iced away the game in the bottom half of the seventh by plating two more runs to increase their lead to 5-1.
The story of the night was the performance of Pelicans starter Chris Vines (3-1). In seven innings, he allowed just four hits and one run. He had excellent command of his pitches, striking out five without walking a single batter. Jaye Chapman made his Pelicans debut in the eighth, pitching a scoreless frame. Brett Butts came on in the ninth and allowed one run but ultimately slammed the door on the hopes of the Blue Rocks.
The Pelicans will enjoy a day off on Tuesday, before opening up a three-game set with the Salem Avalanche on Wednesday, July 9th at 7:05 p.m.
