TONIGHT: The Potomac Nationals and Salem Avalanche meet in the final two games of a three-game series...The P-Nats have now had three straight games either delayed or postponed after a persistent rain forced tonight's doubleheader....Potomac has a 0.5 game lead over second-place Lynchburg atop the Carolina League Northern Division.
TONIGHT: The Potomac Nationals send Washington Nationals right-hander Zack Segovia to the mound making his Carolina League debut...The 25-year-old was signed as a minor league free agent last month after being released by the Philadelphia Phillies...The former second-round pick was promoted from Low-A Hagerstown on July 4 after allowing four runs in five innings in his lone start with the Suns...Segovia began the year with Double-A Reading and went 0-1 with a 14.41 ERA in four appearances, one start before being sent down to Advanced-A Clearwater...The Forney, Texas, native had "Tommy John" surgery in October of 2003 and missed all of the 2004 season...He bounced back and had his best year in 2006 and broke camp with the Phillies to start 2007...The Clearwater, Fla., resident made his Major League debut against the Florida Marlins on April 8 and took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits in five innings...He is the son-in-law of Hagerstown manager Darnell Coles...Right-hander Jhonny Nunez gets the ball in game two...The 22-year-old took the loss in his last outing after giving up five runs, four earned, on five hits in 5 1/3 innings...He did strike out nine batters and walked a pair...The former Dodger farmhand had won consecutive starts after opening the season 0-6.
VIEW FROM THE TOP: Today marks the 89th consecutive day the P-Nats have been in or had a share of the division lead since moving to the top spot on April 10...Last season the Nationals spent 31 consecutive days in first from April 5 through May 5...The P-Nats ended the first half in last place, 10 games under .500 and only saw first place for one day, June 21, after May 5.
WILKIE WONKED: All-Star reliever Josh Wilkie allowed a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning Saturday night and was saddled with a blown save the loss...It was the first time in three tries the right-hander failed to convert a save...Roberto Mena's RBI, infield single marked the first time since May 27 Wilkie allowed a run...He gave up a three-run homer to Lynchburg's Jamie Romak, the first batter he faced in that contest...Overall, the former non-drafted free agent sign went 18 1/3 innings without allowing a run.
GET-LOW: Outfielder Marvin Lowrance was named the Carolina League Offensive Player of the Week today becoming the third Potomac player, along with former P-Nats Jordan Zimmermann and Edgardo Baez, to win a weekly award ...Over his past five games, the 23-year-old is 9-for-19 (.474) with five home runs, 11 RBI, and eight runs scored...He has also walked three times and struck out just twice...The California-native has raised his batting average from .242 to .260 over that span...He had hit just .214 in June and is off to a .429 start to July.
ROAR FROM THE LYONS DEN: Recently promoted infielder Dan Lyons has hits in each of his first five starts with the P-Nats...Over his last five contests he is 9-for-19 (.474) with two doubles, three RBI, two runs, four walks, three strikeouts and he has been hit by a pitch...Lyons had a career-night Tuesday night in Kinston going 4-for-4 and reaching base all five times he came to the plate including a double, RBI, and a walk...The 23-year-old previously had two three-hit performances in Low-A Hagerstown...Lyons was a 14th-round selection in the 2007 draft out of the University of Minnesota.
HERE'S JOHNNY!: Washington Nationals catcher Johnny Estrada made his second rehab start with Potomac last night and went 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI...Through two games, Estrada is 2-for-8 with three RBI, an intent...The 32-year-old was placed on the DL on May 9 with ulnar neuritis in his right elbow...The veteran Major Leaguer has played with five clubs in his 12-year career including Philadelphia, Atlanta, Arizona, Milwaukee and Washington...The former 2004 NL All-Star and Silver Slugger Award winner was signed by the Nationals as a free agent this past January.
SEEING RED: The Potomac Nationals will dawn a different look in game two of tonight's doubleheader at Pfitzner Stadium as the club wears its alternate red jerseys for the second time this season...The jerseys are part of a partnership between the P-Nats and the ALS Society and will be auctioned off following the team's game against the Lynchburg Hillcats on August 24...All of the proceeds from the jersey auction will go toward research and finding a cure for Lou Gehrig's Disease.
