New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - Garrett Broshuis took a perfect game into the sixth inning and watched as the Rock Cats erased his bid at perfection and a shutout as the Defenders escaped with a 6-5 win at New Britain Stadium.

Broshuis (8-6, 3.34) retired the first 18 batters he faced. In the bottom of the sixth, he lost the perfect game, no-hitter, and shutout in the blink of an eye. Dustin Martin led off the sixth and reached base on an error by first baseman David Maroul. Brian Dinkelman followed with a single to center field that broke up the no-hit bid. Brock Peterson then stepped to the plate and delivered a two-run double that put the Rock Cats on the board, 5-2. Another error by the Defenders - this time by second baseman Olmo Rosario - allowed Peterson to score from third later in the inning.

The Rock Cats struck again in the eighth. Radolfo Palacios doubled and scored on a double by Dinkelman to close the gap, 5-4. Things then got wild for the Rock Cats in the top of the ninth. Ryan Mullins walked the leadoff batter, Jake Wald, who then advanced to third on a throwing error by Mullins on a pickoff attempt throw to first. Mullins then unleashed a wild pitch that allowed Wald to score from third.

Kelvin Pichardo appeared to be in trouble in the bottom of the ninth as the Rock Cats had three hits and scored a run to come within one, but he held on to record his sixth save of the season.

Rosario led off the game with a home run to left field to put the Defenders ahead, 1-0. In the fourth, the Defenders tacked on another run with back-to-back doubles by Eddy Martinez-Esteve and Adam Witter.

Antoan Richardson's single to left field scored Carlos Sosa in the fifth for a 3-0 lead. The inning ended on a play at the plate on Richardson's hit when Maroul tried attempted to score from second. In the sixth, Witter added a two-run homer to right field to extend the lead, 5-0.

Broshuis finished with three runs (1 ER) on two hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked none. Anthony Swarzak labored through six innings. Swarzak (3-7, 6.07) surrendered five runs on 12 hits.
