Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Pelicans (3-5) put together a last ditch effort in the ninth inning but fell short in game two against the Potomac Nationals (7-1) by a final score of 6-4. The P-Nats have now won eight of the twelve meetings this season.

After working a quick 1-2-3 inning in the first, Pelicans starter Ryne Reynoso hit a rock in the road in the second. Edgardo Baez and Bill Rhinehart started the frame with singles. After Marvin Lowrance struck out, Brian Finegan and Francisco Plasencia recorded back-to-back RBI singles to give the P-Nats a 2-0 lead. Jhonatan Solano then flied out to deep center field, which allowed Finegan to score. Michael Martinez followed with a run scoring double down the right field line to give Potomac a 4-0 lead.

The Pelicans scored their first runs of the night in the fifth inning. Concepcion Rodriguez lead off the inning by scorching his third home run of the season to left field. Jon Mark Owings followed with a line drive home run into Land Shark Landing to trim the deficit to 4-2. It was the second time this season that the Pelicans hit back-to-back home runs. Travis Jones and Tyler Flowers connected on successive homers on May 30th against the Frederick Keys.

The Pelicans added one more in sixth inning on an RBI single by Tyler Flowers that scored Ernesto Mejia, who doubled to start the inning.

Potomac scored much needed insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning. Bill Rhinehart notched a one out single and stole second base. Marvin Lowrance brought home Rhinehart with a standup double to right field. Francisco Plasencia stretched the lead to 6-3 with an RBI single that scored Lowrance.

High drama ensued in the ninth inning as the Pelicans loaded the bases with two down. Eric Campbell was walked by reliever Martin Beno to force home Jon Mark Owings and cut the deficit to 6-4. Unfortunately for the Pelicans, Beno recovered to strike out Ernesto Mejia on three fastballs to end the game.

Ryne Reynoso (6-6) was saddled with the loss in five innings of work, allowing eight hits and four runs. Potomac starter Jhonny Nunez picked up his second win in as many starts, giving up just three hits in five innings of work.

The Pelicans play the series finale against the Potomac Nationals on Saturday, June 28th at 7:05 p.m. LHP Scott Diamond will make the start for Myrtle Beach, while Potomac will counter with LHP Ross Detwiler (5-4, 5.70).
