
Arencibia, Mathews hit 3-run HRs in 6-1 win over Sea Dogs

Manchester, NH- J.P. Arencibia slammed a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning, and Aaron Mathews belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to power the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to a 6-1 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs before a crowd of 6,124 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Friday night. Left-hander Brett Cecil held Portland to one run on three hits over 5.1 innings to record his second win of the season.
New Hampshire (27-45) took a 3-0 lead against losing pitcher Dave Gassner in the bottom of the first inning. After the first two batters were retired, Travis Snider (1-for-4, R) extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single to right, Jacob Butler (1-for-3, R, BB) followed with a single to center and Arencibia (1-for-4, HR, 3 RBI) slammed his first career Eastern League home run off the facing of the Samuel Adams Bar & Grill in left field.
Mathews (2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI) connected for his fifth home run of the season off Gassner (0-2) in the bottom of the fifth inning, a shot that bounced off the roof of the Samuel Adams Bar & Grill with Ryan Klosterman (walk) and Chris Gutierrez (single) aboard to make it 6-0.
Portland (39-32) scored its lone run off Cecil (2-1) in the top of the sixth inning when Tony Granadillo (2-for-3, BB, R) singled and scored when Sandy Madera (1-for-3, 2B, RBI, BB) doubled to right field off reliever Seth Overbey.
Cecil struck out four and walked two to earn the victory. Overbey (1.2 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 K), Jean Machi (1 IP) and Zach Dials (1 IP) combined for 3.2 scoreless innings of relief.
Gassner allowed six runs on seven hits in six innings to suffer the loss. The left-hander struck out five and did not allow a walk.
The Fisher Cats and the Sea Dogs play the second game of their three-game series Saturday night at 7:05pm. New Hampshire sends right-hander Brandon Magee (0-9, 5.84) to the mound against Portland left-hander Kris Johnson (4-3, 3.91).
