
'Dogs drop opener

(Manchester, NH) - JP Arencibia and Aaron Mathews both hit 3-run home runs to lead the Fisher Cats (27-45) past the Sea Dogs, 6-1, to open a three-game series at Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Friday night. The Sea Dogs (39-32) have dropped 13 of their last 20 games, including three of their last five in Manchester.
New Hampshire started the scoring in the first inning against Portland starter Dave Gassner (0-2). After Gassner recorded the first two outs, Travis Snider (1-4) and Jacob Butler (1-3, BB) reached on back-to-back singles. Gassner then left an 0-2 pitch over the heart of the plate and Arencibia deposited it into the Samuel Adams Bar and Grill in left field for a 3-0 New Hampshire lead.
With one out in the sixth, Mathews would hit his homerun onto the roof of the Bar and Grill on another 0-2 pitch. Gassner would come out after the sixth, allowing all six New Hampshire runs on seven hits. He struck out five and walked just one batter in his 3rd start for Portland.
While Gassner served up the long balls, New Hampshire starter Brett Cecil had one of his best outings of the season, allowing just one run in 5.1 innings. He allowed just three hits to the Dogs, who entered the game with the second best team batting average (.275) on the season. Cecil would finish with four strikeouts and two walks to earn his 2nd win of the season (2-1).
Portland scored their lone run in the sixth inning on Sandy Madera's RBI double. Tony Granadillo finished with two hits and scored the lone run. Carlos Vasquez fired the final two innings, allowing three walks and no runs.
The âDogs and âCats play game two of their series on Saturday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. Catch all of the action beginning at 6:40 PM with the Correct Deck Pre-Game on the U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network. LHP Kris Johnson (4-3, 3.91) takes on RHP Brandon Magee (0-9, 5.84).
Notes...Bubba Bell had his hitting streak snapped at 10 games...Portland is 8-7 against New Hampshire this season...Mickey Hall extended his hitting streak to four games with a double.
