Frederick Keys News Release
The Frederick Keys have been looking for a dominant start from a member of the rotation for the last few weeks ... and they got it from Brandon Erbe on Tuesday night. The young right-hander allowed one earned run, despite not surrendering a hit through seven innings of work, propelling the Keys to victory over the Wilmington Blue Rocks, 3-1.
Erbe retired the first two batters he faced in the first, before hitting Joe Dickerson in the foot with a fastball. Erbe then set down the next sixteen Wilmington batters he faced in order.
Wilmington right-hander Jason Godin also pitched well. The Keys didn't get their first hit of the ball game until the fourth, when Matt Wieters led off the inning with a double. Frederick wouldn't get on the scoreboard, though, until the bottom of the fifth. Miguel Abreu led off the frame with a solo homerun, his first of the season, to put the Keys out in front 1-0.
Josh Johnson led off the top of the seventh with a walk. He was the first Blue Rock to reach base since the first. Dickerson followed that up by working a walk. Jeff Bianchi sacrificed the two runners over. Anthony Seratelli hit a ground ball to first, knocking in Johnson, and tying the ball game at one.
Erbe's night was done after the seventh. He allowed just the one run on NO hits, walked one and struck out nine. Despite the excellent outing he would get a no decision.
Southpaw Ryan Rodriguez came in to pitch the eighth. With one man out, Wilver Perez hit a double to right to break up the no hitter. Rodriguez worked out of the jam without allowing a run to score.
Bobby Andrews led off the bottom of the eighth with a single. Ryan McCarthy then chopped a ball up the middle. The ball tipped off reliever Tyler Chambliss' glove and went towards the hole on the right side of the infield. McCarthy was aboard on the infield single. Wieters then did something nobody expected him to do; laid down a sacrifice bunt. With runners on second and third and one down, Brandon Snyder drilled a ball into the game in right-center field. Two runs scored. Snyder was thrown out at second base, but the damage was done as the Keys led 3-1.
Rodriguez picked up the win after pitching a scoreless eighth, improving his record to 3-0. Chambliss got the loss. His record dropped to 2-1. Chad Thall pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his third save of the season.
The Keys will continue this week-long home stand tomorrow evening, as they open up a 4-game series with the first-place Potomac Nationals. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00. For ticket information, contact our box office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS.
