Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - A two-run single by Sean Kazmar in the eighth inning and Kyle Blank's solo blast in the ninth gave San Antonio a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Corpus Christi before 5,950 Tuesday night at Whataburger Field.

The Hooks, who've dropped seven of their last 10, have not won consecutive games since May 15-16.

Eli Iorg gave Corpus Christi (28-35) a chance in the ninth, leading off the frame with his eighth home run of the season, a line shot to left field. Missions reliever Greg Burke retired the next three batters in order to preserve his sixth save.

Paul Abraham (1-0), fresh from Triple-A Portland, logged the win after striking out two in the seventh.

San Antonio (34-29) pushed a run across in the third against Brian Bogusevic. Kazmar opened the frame with a single to left field. He was sacrificed to second on a bunt by pitcher Matt Buschmann and after a wild pitch scored from third on Jonathan Schemmel's bloop single to right.

The Hooks responded in the home half thanks to a lead-off triple by Bogusevic and Richie Paz' sacrifice fly.

Paz was at it again the fifth, helping the Hooks' cause in a two-out rally. Drew Sutton reached on a single to right and jogged home when Paz blasted a 1-0 slider over the fence in left-center. Paz's first home run of the season gave Corpus Christi a 3-1 lead.

Seth Johnston cut the margin to one in the sixth, lining an RBI single into left field.

Bogusevic, in search of his first 2008 victory, earned a no decision after scattering seven hits and two runs over 5.1 innings. The southpaw walked two and struck out two.

Buschmann surrendered three runs and six hits in six innings of work. He walked one and struck out six.

Evan Englebrook (2-2) was tagged with the loss after yielding three singles, a wild pitch and two runs in the decisive eighth.

Lefties Steve Garrison (4-3) and Polin Trinidad (1-1) square off in the series finale Wednesday night at 7:05.

In other news, Houston Astros assistant general manager Ricky Bennett announced Tuesday night that outfielder Jimmy Van Ostrand, 23, has been promoted from High-A Salem to Corpus Christi.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Van Ostrand was named Monday to the Carolina League All-Star squad.

In his first Carolina League season, Van Ostrand stands seventh in the circuit with a batting average of .305. He tops the Avalanche with 39 RBIs. From May 23-31, he hit safely in 11 consecutive games and drove in 17 runs.

The native of Vancouver, British Columbia, has started 22 times each in left field and at first base.

Van Ostrand played collegiately at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He was selected by Houston in the eighth round (249th pick) of the 2006 draft.

Salem is 28-36 overall, third in the Carolina League's Southern Division. Avalanche catcher Koby Clemens is Salem's other All-Star representative.

The Carolina League All-Stars play their California League counterparts on June 24 in Myrtle Beach, S.C
