Charleston RiverDogs centerfielder Abraham Almonte has been added as a reserve to the 2008 South Atlantic League (SAL) Southern Division All-Star team, the league announced Saturday. The SAL All-Star Game will take place June 17th at NewBridge Bank Park, the home of the Greensboro Grasshoppers.

"Abraham is certainly deserving of this honor," said RiverDogs manager Torre Tyson. "Had he not missed several weeks this season due to injury, his selection would have been a no-brainer."

The 18-year-old Yankees prospect replaces injured Columbus Catfish centerfielder Emeel Salem on the Southern Division squad.

Almonte has made quite an impression in his first SAL season, establishing himself as one of the premier all-around players in the circuit. The Dominican Republic native is currently hitting .289 with five home runs, 27 RBI, 27 runs scored and a team-high 13 stolen bases.

After missing 18 games in May due to a lower-body injury, Almonte has returned to the lineup with a hot bat, hitting .300 (10-for-30) in eight games with two doubles, two RBI, six runs scored and two stolen bases.

Almonte joins RiverDogs catcher Jesus Montero, second baseman Justin Snyder, pitchers Jason Stephens and Jonathan Ortiz and manager Tyson in representing Charleston at the upcoming mid-summer classic.

Former RiverDogs third baseman Mitch Hilligoss was the MVP of last year's All-Star Game at State Mutual Stadium in Rome, Ga., a 3-1 victory for the Southern Division.
