RailCats Sign TF-South, Saint Joseph's (Ind.) Star Joe Panozzo to Bolster Bullpen (May 27, 2008)

GARY, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats have signed former Saint Joseph's (Ind.) and Thornton Fractional South High School star Joe Panozzo to a 2008 contract, the team announced today. To make room for Panozzo on the roster, infielder Omar Padilla has been placed on waivers.
A right-handed relief pitcher, Panozzo played briefly for the RailCats in 2007, immediately following the end of his senior season at Saint Joseph's. While at the Division II school in Rensselaer, Indiana, Panozzo earned First Team All-Region honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association after going 7-1 with a 1.30 ERA and seven saves in 2007.
A Northern League rookie, Panozzo will be expected to bolster a RailCats bullpen that coughed up a pair of last at bat leads in a four-game series at Fargo-Moorhead and has a cumulative ERA over 7.00 this year.
Padilla appeared in six games with the RailCats, starting the last three at third base. A product of Southeast Missouri State University, Padilla went 4-for-17 (.235) at the plate with two walks and two runs batted in.
Panozzo will be in uniform tonight when the RailCats (3-8) open a three-game series at Northern League leading Kansas City (8-3). First pitch of tonight's game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with live audio coverage available on WEFM, 95.9 FM, and online at www.sportsjuice.com .
