KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Kansas City's Kenny Durost did not allow a hit until the sixth inning and the T-Bones scored four times in the third and fifth, racing past the Gary SouthShore RailCats, 9-1 Tuesday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
Durost (1-0) finished the night having allowed only two hits and one run in seven innings, winning for the first time in 2008. The RailCats first hit and only run came in the sixth when Yuki Matsumoto walked to lead off, went to third on John McCarthy's single, and scored when Eric McNamee hit into a double play.
Kansas City got busy offensively in the third against RailCats starter Jeremy Plexico, striking four times with two out. After Plexico got Geoff McCallum to hit into a fielder's choice, putting runners on first and third, Rob Watson lined an RBI single off the third base bag to score one. On the very next pitch, Brad Correll unloaded his third home run of the year.
The T-Bones got to Plexico for four more in the fifth, again highlighted by a two-out home run. With two runs already in, Kevin Mahar drove in two more with his second longball of the season.
Plexico (0-2) allowed nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits in his third start, walking two and striking out only one. Plexico had faced the minimum through the first two innings before running into trouble. Joe Panozzo - signed earlier in the day - made his 2008 debut and threw two scoreless innings for the RailCats.
McCarthy finished with two of the three RailCats hits, his first two-hit game of the season. The RailCats played for the third straight game without injured outfielder Mike Reese and for the fourth game in a row without injured third baseman Tanner Townsend. Brett Wallace - the RailCats opening day catcher - made his first professional start at third.
The RailCats (3-9) are just 1-4 on their current seven-game road trip and will send Tony Cogan (0-1, 1.50 ERA) to the hill tomorrow to try and even the three-game series with the T-Bones. Kansas City (9-3) will counter with right-hander Mark Michael (1-1, 3.60 ERA). That game, scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m., can be heard live on WEFM, 95.9 FM, and online at www.railcatsbaseball.com .
The RailCats return home Friday to start a three-game series against Fargo-Moorhead at U. S. Steel Yard. For tickets to Friday, Saturday or Sunday's game, contact the RailCats Ticket Office at (219) 882-BALL or log on to www.railcatsbaseball.com .
