Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (May 9, 2008) - One day after recording a season-high 14 hits, the Burlington Bes only had two hits Friday night and lost at home to Beloit 3-0. Ed Cegarra only allowed one run in eight innings of work but still took the loss as the Bees dropped their second consecutive game to the Snappers.
Cegarra pitched an absolute gem for the Bees. He did not allow a single run through the first seven innings. In the eighth, he recorded two outs before allowing a single to Chris Cates. Garrett Olson then came to the plate and hit a bloop single to shallow right field. With two outs, the speedy Cates was running the entire time and ended up scoring on the hit.
The Snappers added two more runs to give them some breathing room in the ninth inning. Ben Swaggerty came into the ballgame to pitch the eighth and only recorded two outs while giving up two runs on three hits. Yensi Lopez came in and finished out the inning for the Bees.
Beloit starting pitcher Daniel Berlind also pitched very well as he allowed just two hits in his seven innings of work en route to his third win of the season. Spencer Steedly pitched two innings of no-hit baseball with four strikeouts for his second save of the year.
Cegarra was charged with the loss as he is now 1-3 but his ERA did drop to 1.93. Jason Taylor and Alwin Perez had the only hits in the game for the Bees.
Game three of the four game series is scheduled for Saturday night at Community Field. Matt Mitchell is the scheduled starter for the Bees. First pitch is set for 6:30. Tickets are available by logging onto www.GoBees.com, visiting Community Field or by calling (319) 754-5705. The game can be heard on 1490 KBUR and online at www.GoBees.com.
