Portland Beavers News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Shawn Estes struck out seven over 5 1/3 innings and got plenty of support as the Portland Beavers erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning to cruise past the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 13-3 Tuesday night at Security Service Field.

The series-opening win snapped Portland's three-game losing streak.

Nick Hundley was 3-for-6 with three runs scored and cracked a three-run homer in the ninth for good measure, giving Portland its largest margin of victory since an 11-1 rout over the Sky Sox at Security Service Field on July 1, 2007.

Jody Gerut led the charge in the fifth, hitting a three-run double that highlighted the seven-run frame. The Beavers (5-7) took advantage of two Colorado Springs errors in the inning and sent 12 men to the plate for a 10-0 cushion.

Luis Rodriguez, the league's leading hitter going into the game, pushed his season-opening hitting streak to nine games for the Beavers, who bounced back after tough defeats in each of the last three games of their previous series with Salt Lake.

Portland, which tallied 11 hits and drew 11 walks, had several other scoring opportunities but stranded a season-high 11 base runners.

Estes limited the Sky Sox (6-7) to a pair of runs, scattering seven hits and driving in two runs to help his cause.

Victor Zambrano (0-2) took the loss, though seven of his 10 runs allowed were unearned. The right-hander did issue six walks and yielded seven hits in over his 4 2/3 innings.

Chip Ambres doubled in a run and scored on Estes' two-out RBI single as the Beavers took a 2-0 lead in the second. In the fourth, Craig Stansberry reached on a leadoff single and eventually scored on a wild pitch thrown by Zambrano.

The series continues Wednesday morning at 9:35 a.m. (Pacific).

NOTES: Earlier in the day, the Padres recalled pitcher Kevin Cameron and outrighted pitcher Enrique Gonzalez to Portland ... the Beavers also placed pitcher Mike Adams on the disabled list with a strained right shoulder and added pitcher Mike Megrew to the active roster from extended spring training. Megrew struck out three and did not allow a run in 1 2/3 innings of work in his season debut Tuesday night.
