Spirit Outshoot Whalers in 4-1 Loss

(Plymouth, MI) The Saginaw Spirit lost 4-1 to the Plymouth Whalers Wednesday night in Plymouth. The Spirit out shot the Whalers 49-25; Plymouth goalie Jeremy Smith, a Nashville Predators draft pick, was in net for the Whalers. Saginaw associate captain Jack Combs tallied the lone Spirit goal. The Spirit have 21 points and a record of 9-10-2-1.

The Spirit offense launched an aggressive attack on the Whalers net in the first two periods, notching 20 shots in the first and 15 shots in the second. Despite the effort, Plymouth managed to pull out to a 2-0 lead. Winger Joe McCann, a former Spirit player, tallied the game opening goal on the power play at 16:55 in the first period. Center Chris Terry and defenseman Wes Cunningham earned the assists on the goal. Terry would notch a goal at 1:39 in the second period to move the score to 2-0 Plymouth, assisted by center Andrew Fournier and winger Patrick Lee.

Plymouth continued their momentum into the third period, with a power play goal from winger A.J. Jenks at the 4:45 mark, assisted by winger Kaine Geldart. Spirit center Jack Combs put Saginaw on the scoreboard with the team's 41st shot of the game, a power play goal at 9:02 in the third period. Wingers Tomas Zaborsky (NYR) and Jan Mursak (DET) assisted on the goal. The Whalers answered in the final minutes of the period, sealing the game 4-1. Cunningham scored the goal courtesy assists from defenseman Leo Jenner and center Tyler G. Brown.

The game also saw each team taking a penalty shot - the first came at 14:37 in the first period. Whalers' center Vern Cooper took the shot but was turned away by Spirit netminder Ryan Daniels (OTT). Saginaw's Combs took a penalty shot at 1:40 in the third period but was unable to get the puck past Plymouth goalie Jeremy Smith.

Spirit netminder Ryan Daniels tallied 21 saves; Whalers goalie Jeremy Smith notched 48.

The Spirit host the Sudbury Wolves at TheDow Event Center Friday, November 23rd and the Peterborough Petes Saturday, November 24th. Both games start at 7:11 PM.
