San Antonio Missions News Release

SAN ANTONIO - Baseball America has named the San Antonio Missions the Minor League Team of the Year for 2007. The Missions won their 11th Texas League Championship and their fourth in 11 years. This season was their first as the Double-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres.

"We are thrilled to be recognized as the Minor League Team of the Year. It is a well-deserved honor for our players and one that the City of San Antonio and our loyal fans can be very proud of,"stated Missions President Burl Yarbrough. "We are appreciative of everything the Padres have done this season and they have proven to everyone that they are committed to bringing championship baseball to San Antonio."

The Missions were lead all season long by Texas League Player of the Year Chase Headley and Pitcher of the Year Josh Geer. The first half of the season the Missions started strong, but stumbled down the stretch to finish in last place in the Texas League South Division with a record of 31-39. At the start of the 2nd half the Padres made a couple of promotions from Single-A that helped make the difference. The additions of 2B Matt Antonelli, OF Chad Huffman, LHP Wade LeBlanc, and the free agent signing of Edwin Moreno helped Missions Manager Randy Ready fill a few holes. Ready then lead the Missions to a 42-27 record to win the 2nd Half South Division title. The team swept the Frisco RoughRiders in three games to win the Texas League South Division and finished the Springfield Cardinals off in four games to win the Texas League Pennant. The team won 16 of their last 20 games to capture the crown.

Missions 2B Matt Antonelli, the San Diego Padres first round draft pick in 2006, was named to Baseball America's All-Star Minor League Team at 2B. The All-Star team consists of 14 players, one from each position, a DH and five pitchers. Antonelli ranked second in all Minor League Baseball in Runs Scored with 123.

Headley was named to Baseball America's 2nd Team as a 3B. Headley finished second in all Minor League Baseball in On-Base Percentage with a .437 average. Other notable achievements by Missions players this season, RHP Josh Geer's 17 wins tied for most in all of Minor League Baseball and RHP Will Inman's 180 strikeouts was 2nd overall.

Season tickets for the 2008 San Antonio Missions season are now on sale and can be purchased by contacting the Missions offices at 210-675-7275. Great seats are still available.
