Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
FLORENCE, KY - Following a rain delay of over an hour, the Traverse City Beach Bums concluded their series with the Florence Freedom at Champion Window Field by recording an 8-6 come from behind victory to take two of three from the .
Florence opened a 2-0 lead with a pair of unearned runs in the first against Phil Tognetti. Ryan Basham drove in a run with a double and Nate Yoho lifted a sacrifice fly to account for the scoring.
The Beach Bums were able to take advantage of some wildness by Florence starter Josh Bruns to tie the game in the top of the second. Justin Holmes doubled with one out and Zack Kalter followed with a double down the right field line that scored Holmes and gave the Beach Bums their first run. Jeff Brown and Brad Roblin walked to load the bases, and Steve Young brought in the tying run with an RBI groundout.
Following two Florence runs in the bottom of the second to open a 4-2 lead, the Beach Bums again battled back. Aaron Garza led off the top of the third with his ninth homer of the season and fourth in as many games to pull the Beach Bums within 4-3.
A break helped the Beach Bums take the lead against Florence starter Josh Bruns in the fourth. Steve Young and Curtis Ledbetter both singled with one away. The inning nearly ended as Aaron Garza swung and missed, but a balk was called before the pitch enabling Young to score from third to tie the game. Garza made the most of his second chance, doubling off the wall to give the Beach Bums a 5-4 edge.
Florence tied the game in the sixth inning as designated hitter Collin Martin lifted a sacrifice fly off of Brett Bostelman, the fourth pitcher of the game for the Beach Bums. The run nearly didn't count as Aaron Garza threw to second to get the tagging J.D. Foust, but the run crossed just before the final out to tie the game.
The contest did not stay tied for long as the Beach Bums grabbed their second lead in the top of the seventh. Justin Holmes began the inning with a basehit against the second Florence reliever, Matt Rainey. Zack Kalter dropped down a sacrifice bunt but Rainey bobbled the ball and Kalter reached safely. Jeff Brown moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice and Brad Roblin brought them both in with a single into right field and Steve Young followed with a hit to extend the advantage to 8-5. The Freedom scored in the seventh, but Nick Pepper recorded the save by working the final two frames. Brett Bostelman earned the victory as Jon Cahill used six pitchers.
Aaron Garza, Steve Young, Curtis Ledbetter, Justin Holmes, and Zack Kalter all finished with two hits each as every member of the Beach Bums order reached base. Garza was the Player of the Game, doubling and driving in a pair.
The Beach Bums will continue the roadtrip tomorrow night at Chillicothe in a 7:05 pm game. The contest will be the first meeting of the season between the two teams. LHP Tom Thornton (1-2, 4.08) makes his fourth start for the Beach Bums while Chillicothe sends LHP Brian Marshall (2-4, 6.07). Marshall will be the fourth straight lefty throwing against the Beach Bums. Tim Calderwood will broadcast the game on The Fox FM beginning with the Beach Bums On Deck Show at 6:45 pm.
