Carolina Mudcats News Release

Jackson, TN --- Ryan Bear singled home Grant Psomas with two outs in the top of the 12th inning to send Carolina to its fourth straight win, defeating West Tenn 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at Pringles Park.

Psomas, who doubled twice and homered, shot a double up the alley in right-center with two outs in the 12th against Craig James (L, 3-3). Bear knocked the next pitch over the head of second baseman Luis Valbuena to score Psomas ahead of Prentice Redman's throw from right field for the go-ahead run. Chris Mobley (W, 4-0) retired the top of the West Tenn (8-17) order 1-2-3 to register the win.

Carolina (12-13) remains two games behind first-place Huntsville, but clawed to within one game of .500 after beginning the second half 0-6.

The Mudcats tied the game at 4-4 in the ninth when Bear scored on a wild throw by reliever Mumba Rivera. Bear doubled to the centerfield warning track to start the inning, then was bunted to third by Jai Miller, but scored when Rivera threw wildly past Mark Tuiasosopo at third base, jogging home with the tying run.

Mobley pitched out of major trouble in the last of the 11th when Tuiasosopo blooped a double inside the right field line to start the inning, then advanced to third on a bunt. After an intentional walk, Luis Oliveros struck out against Mobley, who then retired Chris Minaker on a bouncer to Rex Rundgren at short to end the threat.

Carolina took a 1-0 lead in the first on a single by Lee Mitchell to score Johnny Raburn. Mitchell's hit extended his hitting streak to 13 games with an RBI-single against rehabbing Seattle Mariners pitcher Mark Lowe.

West Tenn scored twice in the second against first-time starter Blake McGinley, then former UNC Tar Heel Marshall Hubbard homered with a man on in the third for a 4-1 lead.

Grant Psomas hit his 11th homer of the season in the fourth, then Chase Lambin capped a two-out, three-single uprising in the fifth to shave the deficit to 4-3.

Carolina is off Monday before opening a five-game homestand Tuesday night against the Montgomery Biscuits. Former Biscuit Chris Seddon will start the opener at 7:15 PM ET.
