Mobile BayBears News Release

SEVIERVILLE, TN - For the second straight game, Tennessee scored three times in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the BayBears. Sunday the BayBears entered the last inning leading 6-4, when a two-run double with the bases loaded by Matt Craig tied the game. With the bases still loaded, and the BayBears infield playing back, Chris Robinson hit a slow ground ball to Mobile shortstop Ronnie Merrill. With the ball hit too slowly for a double play, Merrill threw home, and Craig slid ahead of the throw for the winning run in Tennessee's 7-6 victory.

The BayBears lost three of five games in Tennessee, with all three in walk-off fashion for the Smokies. The BayBears now sit 7.5 games behind first place Montgomery and Jacksonville, who are in a two-way tie.

The BayBears took off in the first inning against former Major Leaguer Ryan O'Malley, with RBI doubles by Ronnie Merrill and Carlos Gonzalez, and an RBI single by Jarred Ball. After Tennessee scored three times in the bottom of the first and once in the bottom of the fourth off Mobile starter Brooks Brown, Merrill's sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth tied the game at four.

With two outs in the top of the eighth Justin Upton hit a home run, two batters after a Wilkin Castillo triple. The home run was Upton's tenth with the BayBears. The loss spoiled a strong appearance by lefthander Clint Goocher, who threw three scoreless innings for the BayBears.

The BayBears next play Tuesday against West Tenn at Hank Aaron Stadium.
