Spikes Bats Fall Silent In 5-1 Loss To Jamestown

June 22, 2007 - New York-Penn League (NYPL) State College Spikes

University Park -- It took the Spikes 17 innings to score a run at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, and when they did it was too little too late as the Spikes fell to the Jamestown Jammers by the count of 5-1. Matt Foust (0-1) was tagged with the loss in his professional debut after allowing three runs off five hits through his 3.0 innings of work. Bobby Spain provided all of the Spikes offense with his ninth-inning double plating the only Spikes run.

Jamestown wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as they took advantage of a pair of Foust walks and a fielding error by shortstop Michael Ambrose to take an early 1-0 edge. The lead ballooned to 3-0 in the top of the third when the Jammers strung together four straight hits to tack on two more runs and pad their lead. The Jammers would add single runs in the fourth and ninth to push the score to 5-0.

State College failed to get a runner to third base until the ninth inning, when Spain's double chased home Ambrose from first base for the Spikes lone run of the game, to make the final score 5-1.

The highlight of the evening for the home squad was their defense, as the Spikes turned a club record five double plays, four of which were turned in consecutive innings from the fifth through the eighth. In addition, reliever Taylor Cameron was also impressive for State College, tossing three scoreless innings of relief.

The Spikes will look to rebound tomorrow evening in the middle game of three against the Jammers. Game time is set for 7:05pm. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a Turner Ward Bobble Wall courtesy of The Family Clothesline. Great seats are still available and they can be purchased over the phone by calling 877 - 99 - Spikes, logging on to StateCollegeSpikes.com or in person at the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park box office.
