Staten Island Yankees News Release

The Staten Island Yankees were defeated by the Aberdeen IronBirds by a score of 4 - 3 in a close and hard fought game. The near capacity crowd of 6,526 was not treated to a victory; however, they enjoyed a highly contested game with a few excellent defensive plays as well as a spectacular fireworks display to cap off the night.

The game started off slowly with both teams scoring in the first inning. Aberdeen was able to jump to an early lead after two lead off walks and a wild pitch brought in run. The Yankees responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning by taking advantage of some Aberdeen miscue's.

The Ironbirds struck again in the 2nd, and took the lead 3-2. They scored on a walk with the bases loaded and a fielder's choice. The runs forced out starting pitcher Angel Reyes. The Yankees managed to stifle the IronBirds until the 9th with good performances coming from the bullpen as well as some great defensive plays by third baseman Brian Chavez and shortstop Luis Nunez. Jeff Livek stepped-in after Reyes and pitched lights out for 2.2 innings. Livek let up no runs on zero hits and zero walks. Ryan Zink also pitched well after taking over in his professional debut, allowing four walks but no runs and only one hit in 2.1 innings.

The Yankees tied the game in the fifth inning when Luis Nunez scored on a fielding error by pitchier Andy Schindling. Sound pitching on both sides led to three straight scoreless innings. Phil Bartleski also pitched well after taking over for Zink, however, in the 9th the Ironbirds were able to put together two consecutive hits, a double byTyler Henson and an RBI single by Robbie Widlansky, and score the go ahead run.

The Yankees were unable to mount a comeback in the bottom of the inning as Joe Esposito picked up the win in relief and Phil Bartleski took the loss.

Nick Chigges will take the mound to try to tie up the series tomorrow at 7:00pm at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The Yankees 13th round draft pick will start for the first time in his professional career. The Baby Bombers will also host the final game of the series this Sunday afternoon.

Season ticket, group and single game ticket information is available by calling 718-720-9265, going to www.siyanks.com, or stopping by the Richmond County Bank Ballpark between 9am-5pm Monday through Friday.
