Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING- Early offense and terrific pitching lifted the Lansing Lugnuts to an 8-2 victory over the Great Lakes Loons at Dow Diamond Thusday night. The win snaps a three-game skid for Lansing.
Lansing opened the scoring in the first inning when Chris Emanuele smacked a solo homer over the left field wall to make it 1-0. That run was the first time since last Saturday night that the Lugnuts plated a run before the eighth inning.
The Lugnuts extended the lead in the following frame when Matt Lane ripped a two-run double into the right-center field gap to push the score to 3-0.
The run support would be more than enough for Kyle Ginley (1-4), who was spectacular while picking up his first win of the season. Ginley tossed six innings and held the Loons to just four singles while fanning six batters.
Lansing put the game out of reach in the seventh inning with a five run, two out rally. After two base hits by Jonathan Diaz and Scott Campbell, Chris Emanuele delivered a single into left field to score Diaz and make it a 4-0 game. Travis Snider followed that with a two-run double into left-center field to extend the advantage to 6-0. Brian Pettway then drew a walk before Joey Metropoulos smacked a double off of the center field wall that drove home Snider and Pettway to make it an 8-0 game.
Great Lakes scored its only two runs of the game in the seventh inning on a Scott Van Slyke two-run double into right field.
Lansing (33-31) was able to pick up a game on the West Michigan Whitecaps with the win, as the Lugnuts only trail the Whitecaps by 1 1/2 games heading into the final weekend of the first half.
The Lugnuts will now head to Memorial Stadium to play a five game, three day series against the Fort Wayne Wizards. The two teams will play back-to-back doubleheaders, with the first coming on Friday night. Ray Gonzalez (2-0, 2.67) will start game one for Lansing, while John Hussey (0-5, 7.52) will start for the Wizards.
Game two will feature Chris Reddout (2-0, 2.94) taking the mound for Lansing. He will be opposed by Fort Wayne's Stephen Faris (1-3, 5.06). First pitch for the doubleheader is at 5:30 p.m.
