Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING- Three unearned runs were enough to lift the Dayton Dragons to a 3-0 shutout victory over the Lansing Lugnuts before 1,803 fans at Oldsmobile Park Monday night.

The Dragons scored their first run in the third inning when Denis Phipps drew a walk from Lansing's starting pitcher Adrian Martin. Martin would then pull himself from the game due to injury and was replaced by Zach Dials. After Phipps stole second base, Chris Valaika reached on an infield single. Shortstop Jonathan Diaz threw the ball past the first baseman, and the error allowed Phipps to score to make it 1-0.

Dials would settle down after that to retire 15 consecutive batters, as he tossed six innings of one-hit relief. However the Lugnuts offense was unable to capitalize on the terrific pitching performance.

The Dragons would plate two more runs in the ninth inning to put the game away. Chris Heisey reached on an error, stole second base, and scored on a Logan Parker single to make it 2-0. Parker would come home on two wild pitches by Paul Phillips to extend the lead to 3-0.

Travis Webb (4-3) got the win for the Dragons, as he scattered five hits over five innings of work.

Martin (2-2) suffered the loss for the Lugnuts, allowing an unearned run in two frames.

Jose Rojas picked up his 11th save of the season.

Lansing (32-29) was still able to gain 1/2 game on the West Michigan Whitecaps as they lost a doubleheader to Great Lakes. The Lugnuts now trail in the playoff race by just 2 1/2 games. That sweep also pushed Dayton (40-24) ahead by four games.

The Lugnuts and Dragons will conclude the brief two game series on Tuesday night. Nate Starner (5-5, 4.50) will get the start for the Lugnuts, while Sean Watson (4-2, 2.06) will throw for the Dragons. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
