Winston-Salem Dash News Release

FREDERICK, MD - The Warthogs ninth inning rally fell short as they dropped a 7-5 decision to Frederick on Tuesday night in game two of the three-game series with the Keys. Trailing 7-2 entering the ninth, Winston-Salem scored three runs and loaded the bases with two outs, but pinch hitter Adam Ricks grounded out to end the game in front of over 7,000 fans at Harry Grove Stadium. Overshadowed in the rally was a dominating performance by Frederick starting pitcher Brandon Erbe (4-2). The 19-year-old right-hander collected season highs with eight innings pitched and 11 strikeouts as he limited Winston-Salem to just one earned run on four hits to earn the win.

Winston-Salem utilized the speed of Paulo Orlando to plate a run in the first inning. Orlando reached on an infield single to start the inning. He stole second and third base off Keys starting pitcher Brandon Erbe and crossed the plate as Micah Schnurstein lifted a 3-0 pitch to deep right field for an RBI sacrifice to give the Warthogs a 1-0 lead.

Winston-Salem's lead did not last long as Brian Bock smacked a solo homerun off Matt Zaleski in the second inning to tie the game at one.

Frederick took the lead in the fourth inning as Ryan Finan reached on a single and Travis Brown walked to put runners on first and second base with two outs. Kennard Jones lifted a single to center field that scored Finan. On the play, Brown was gunned down trying to advance to third, but the run had crossed the plate before the final out giving Frederick a 2-1 advantage.

Winston-Salem tied the game in the sixth inning when C.J. Land walked to start the innings and scored on a base hit by Bobbie Hudson to knot the score at two. Frederick took advantage of the Warthogs bullpen as Garry Bakker surrendered three runs in the seventh inning. With two runners on base, Arturo Rivas and Finan delivered back-to-back RBI hits to give the Keys a 4-2 lead. Mark Fleisher added an RBI groundout to extend the Frederick lead to 5-2.

Frederick added a pair of runs in the eighth inning on RBI singles by Pete Maestrales and Finan to move ahead 7-2. The Warthogs rallied in the ninth inning as Robbie Hudson singled and Orlando reached on an error to start the inning. Daron Roberts lined an RBI double down the left field line to score Hudson and move Orlando to third. A wild pitch by Frederick closer Bob McCrory scored Orlando and cut the deficit to 7-4. After walks to Schnurstein and Javier Castillo loaded the bases, pinch hitter Aaron Cunningham drew a free pass to plate the third run of the inning and narrow the Keys lead to 7-5, but that was as close as Winston-Salem would get.

Bakker (0-3) took the loss in relief for Winston-Salem as Erbe earned the win with his stellar performance. McCrory picked up his league leading 12th save of the season for the Keys, who snapped the Warthogs three-game winning streak.

The final game of this three-game series is scheduled for Wednesday, June 6 with the first pitch set for 7 PM. Taking the mound for Winston-Salem will be RHP Derek Rodriguez (4-1, 4.66) and he will square off against RHP Chorye Spoone (4-4, 3.99) for Frederick.
