Seattle Storm News Release

SEATTLE, Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007 - The Seattle Storm today announced the start of the second annual Women in Sports Essay Contest. In honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD), the contest encourages students, grades 4-8 from across the state, to submit a one-page essay answering the following question: Why is it important to celebrate women's athletics? Storm center Wendy Palmer, along with essay judges from the Sonics & Storm organization, will score the entries. The final day for essay submittals is Friday, April 6.

"It's important we celebrate women's athletics and honor the women who broke through barriers for the advancement of equality in sport," Palmer said. "It's my responsibility as a professional athlete to continue to work and empower today's young women and future athletes."

One grand prize winner will receive four tickets to the May 11 preseason game vs. the Sacramento Monarchs at KeyArena, four tickets to the Storm's 2007 Season Opener vs. the Houston Comets on May 19 at KeyArena, a personalized Storm jersey, a $100 gift certificate to the Sonics & Storm Team Shop and an exclusive school visit from Palmer on May 10. The grand prize winner will also have his or her essay posted on storm.wnba.com and will be recognized in a special pregame ceremony prior to the May 11 preseason game.

Five runners-up (one each from grades 4-8) will receive four tickets to the May 11 preseason game vs. the Monarchs at KeyArena and four tickets to the Storm's 2007 Season Opener vs. the Houston Comets on May 19 at the Key. Each runner-up will also have his or her essay posted on storm.wnba.com. Additionally, the first 100 entrants will also receive two tickets to the Storm's May 11 preseason game vs. the Monarchs and an official Storm lanyard.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women's sports. Since that time, NGWSD has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and recognize current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation, and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports.

The 2007 Storm season will open against the Houston Comets on Saturday, May 19, at 7 p.m. The following Wednesday, May 23, Seattle will host the Phoenix Mercury at 7 p.m. at KeyArena. The defending WNBA Champion Detroit Shock will visit KeyArena on Wednesday, June 20.
