Providence Bruins News Release

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, member of the American Hockey League, defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 4-3 in overtime at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Sunday afternoon, jumping back into first place in the Atlantic Division. The P-Bruins got a pair of goals from rookie Martins Karsums, along with additional goals by assistant captains Nate Thompson and Jeremy Reich.

The scoring began early in the first period, with the Penguins' Jonathan Filewich putting home his sixth goal of the year 4:27 in on goaltender Brian Finley, assigned to Providence this morning by the Boston Bruins. Ryan Stone and Alaine Nasreddine picked up the assists. The P-Bruins tied the game at one just under seven minutes later when Thompson earned his second goal of the season, with the helpers going to Reich and defenseman Mark Stuart.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton jumped ahead 3-1 with a pair of goals in the second period by Erik Christensen, his team-leading 10th, and Nasreddine, a power play goal and his third of the year, just over six minutes apart. Filewich, Christensen, Stone and Matt Carkner all had assists in the period as the Penguins held the lead into the third.

In the final frame of regulation, Providence came right back with two goals of its own, first by Reich 2:33 into the period, assisted on by Thompson and veteran Nate DiCasmirro. Then, with just over eight minutes remaining, the young Karsums batted home a rebound while catching goalie Jeff Deslauriers partially out of his net, for this fifth goal of the season and the game-tying tally. Dwayne Zinger and Wacey Rabbit each picked up additional points. After three periods, the game remained tied at three.

Early in the extra session, it was Karsums again, one-timing a shot from the top of the slot for his sixth goal, tied with Ben Walter for the team-lead, and the winner. Kris Versteeg earned the lone assist after taking the puck into the P-Bruins' offensive end one-on-three himself and alertly dishing off the puck to the open Karsums.

Finley earned the win between the pipes, his sixth, while stopping 16 shots, and Deslauriers made 23 saves in the loss. Providence out-shot Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 27-19.

The two sides combined for 14 penalty minutes as the P-Bruins were scoreless in three power play attempts and held the Penguins to one man-advantage goal in four tries.
