Ottawa 67's News Release
Ottawa, Ontario, September 29, 2006 - Jeff Hunt, the President of Ottawa 67's Major Junior A Hockey Club announced today that they will launch their new website on September 29, 2006.
The new look website developed by 18 year old web whiz Kid Keith Peiris's company Cyberteks Design will have several new and exciting features such as video highlights, interactive games for young and old, polls and contests. The Ottawa 67's will provide a cutting-edge, accessible website loaded with rich media content, which will not only make it the most advanced site in the OHL, but one of the most technologically advanced sites in the hockey world.
The database driven Flash event calendar gives users quick access to all of the Ottawa 67's game times, scores, and event information. The calendar does not just provide information on a monthly basis, using the next and previous month buttons users can look ahead to future events. The event and game calendars are updated easily by staff using an administration system.
Nearly every aspect of the old Ottawa 67's site has been redesigned and upgraded. The front page of the site sports a dynamic news ticker and featured player section so new fans can get acquainted with the team. The arena page features an animated seating map where users can click any section to preview the action. The downloads page in the fun zone has new desktop backgrounds of Ottawa 67's players and the player bio pages feature caricatures and comprehensive biographical and statistical information. A new Flash based photo gallery has been added along with dozens of new photos which are now conveniently separated into categories.
The fun zone gives Ottawa 67's fans plenty of ways to interact with their team. Three Flash games have been added with more to come soon. Further more, when fans play the games they are given a chance at winning a monthly prize. There are also the Flash animated e-cards, which allow users to send online greeting cards to anyone with an e-mail address. E-cards have been provided for nearly every occasion. No other OHL team except for the London Knights (also developed by Cyberteks Design) has these advanced features and applications.
A colouring contest has also been provided for the younger fans. The contest showcases the Ottawa 67's mascot Riley. Kids colour in a picture of the mascot using a Flash based paint system, which uses a 21-colour palette, however, the colour mixer gives users millions of colour possibilities. There is a Photoshop-style eyedropper tool, which allows the child to reuse colours they have already mixed. Once the parent has filled out the contact form, the child's coloured picture is e-mailed to the Ottawa 67's for judging, and prizes are awarded every month to the child who submitted the best entry. The child also receives an e-mail containing their coloured picture so they can go back and look at their creation any time.
Coming soon to the merchandise page will be the Ottawa 67's Jersey Customizer. This program allows users to see what their custom jersey will look like as they customize it, and then add it straight to their Ottawa 67's online shopping cart. What makes this customizer truly unique is that when users order a custom jersey, both the user and Ottawa 67's receive an email with a picture of the jersey. This extra functionality allows the Ottawa 67's staff to double check for accuracy and has never been done before by any other web design company.
"Our decision to select Cyberteks Design became evident once we reviewed the portfolio of websites they have developed. The fresh approach 18 year old CEO, Keith Peiris brings to this medium is very convincing", said Vanessa Penny, the Manager of Special Project of Ottawa 67's.
"The first thing we noticed was Keith and all his employees' passion for hockey. Once you've played the game, your passion & respect for the sport deepens; his team's fresh approach to a dynamic website and passion for hockey are two ingredients we were looking for on this project.
The 18 year old CEO of Cyberteks Design, Keith Peiris, who recently received an award as one of Canada Top 20 Under 20, is a first year Nanotechnology Engineering student at University of Waterloo, established the Cyberteks Systems Corporation in 1999 when he was just 11 years old, added, "Recognition of my talent by a leading Major Junior A Hockey Club in Ontario is great for my company's credibility. We will do whatever it takes to assure the continued growth of this partnership." said Peiris.
About Ottawa 67's Major Junior A Hockey Club
On February 16, 1967, the city of Ottawa was awarded a franchise. To recognize the year of entry into the league, that was one of the first hockey leagues organized in Canada in the early 1890s, the owners named their club the Ottawa 67's on June 30, 1967.
Three parties had submitted applications for entry to the league. A group comprised of local businessmen--Bill Cowley, Howard Darwin, and Bill Touhey, as well as Alderman Howard Henry--was successful in bringing Major Junior A hockey to Ottawa for the 1967-68 season. Before the first season began, however, Bill Touhey stepped aside and local sportswriter, Jack Kinsella, became one of the owners.
Darwin served as President of the club for the first five seasons. At the end of the 1974-75 season, Darwin purchased the shares of the other club owners. He was joined by Earl Montagano as a partner in 1975. The duo operated the 67's until the sale of the club in 1998 to current owner Jeff Hunt.
The 67's went to the Memorial Cup for the first time in 1977 at New Westminster, British Columbia. The three-team round-robin also featured the Sherbrooke Beavers from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, as well as the host team, the New Westminster Bruins of the Western Hockey League. The 67's and Bruins met in the final game with the 67's coming up short, 6-5.
In 1984, the 67's entered the Memorial Cup again, this time in Kitchener, Ontario. Beside the host team, the Kitchener Rangers, Kamloops Jr. Oilers represented the Western Hockey League and Laval Voisins, with Mario Lemieux, came from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The 67's won their first franchise Memorial Cup defeating the Rangers, 7-2, with Adam Creighton named the Most Valuable Player in the series.
Ottawa won its second Memorial Cup at the Civic Centre in 1999 with Matt Zultek scoring the winning goal in overtime to defeat the Calgary Hitmen, 7-6.
The 67's won the Ontario Hockey League championship in 2001 and played in the Memorial Cup at Regina, Saskatchewan, but were an exhausted hockey club after beating favoured teams to get to the junior championships. In 2005 the Ottawa 67's won the Bobby Orr trophy as the Ontario Hockey League's Eastern Conference Champions which earned them a berth in the Memorial Cup.
