Spirit Celebrate 5-3 Victory with Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle

(Saginaw, MI) Saginaw defeated the Windsor Spitfires in 5-3 game Saturday night, giving the Spirit a record of 1-3-0-1 and 3 points.

Forward Jack Combs put the Spirit on the scoreboard first with a power play goal at 8:34 in the first period. Forwards Tom Pyatt (NYR '05) and Ryan McDonough assisted on the goal. Saginaw's Patrick Asselin gave the Spirit a 2-0 lead with a goal at 12:40, off of an assist from forward Ryan Berard and Pyatt. The first period ended 2-1, after Windsor's Craig Voakes managed to get the puck past Spirit goaltender Ryan Daniels (OTT '06) at the 17:49 mark.

The Spirit took a commanding lead in the second period with three consecutive goals. Tom Pyatt started the spree first with a power play goal assisted by Matt Corrente (NJ '06) at the 2:08 mark. Pyatt scored again at 7:00 with a short-handed goal, assisted by forward Jan Mursak (DET '06) and Daniels. Patrick Asselin finished out the second period with another goal at 17:14. Corrente and forward Zack Torquato assisted on the goal.

Windsor fought back in the third period, scoring two consecutive power play goals, one from Voakes and another from Greg Nemisz. Despite the Spitfires best efforts, they were unable to crack the Spirit lead, and went home with the loss.

Spirit goaltender Ryan Daniels had 26 saves in the victory, while Spitfire Andrew Engelage stopped 35 of 40 shots.

The night also saw the unveiling of the newest Spirit mascot, Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle! The mascot made its first public appearance prior to the start of the game, following a message to Spirit fans from Stephen Colbert, host of Comedy Central's Colbert Report. The unveiling ceremony was taped for a latter nationally televised showing on the Report for a tentative date of October 2nd. The Report broadcasts Monday through Thursday on Comedy Central at 11:30 PM ET.

The Spirit resume action on Saturday, October 7th at 7:11 PM when they take on the Ottawa 67's. The following Sunday on October 8th, the Spirit will face off against the Sudbury Wolves at 2:00 PM. The Sunday game is both family day and faith day.
