Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

OMAHA - Two Omaha Royals players will receive September call-ups to the big leagues today, with another one getting reinstated from Kansas City's disabled list after finishing a rehab assignment stint with Omaha. Reliever Jose Diaz and catcher Paul Phillips are being promoted from the Royals' Triple-A affiliate, while right-hander Mike Wood is returning to Kansas City after making his last rehab start for Omaha on Monday.

Diaz, who was obtained from Texas in a trade for outfielder Matt Stairs, was 2-3 with a 5.40 ERA in 13 relief appearances for Omaha. In 41 games overall at the Triple-A level this season, including time spent with the Rangers' Triple-A club, Oklahoma, Diaz was 2-3 with a 4.00 ERA. This will mark the first trip to the Majors for the 26-year old right-hander from the Dominican Republic.

Phillips, who was up earlier this season with Kansas City, played in 91 games with Omaha and batted .243 with 9 home runs and 39 RBI. The 29-year old product of the University of Alabama played in seven games for Kansas City from July 15 to August 1, going 6-for-22 (.273) at the plate.

Wood went 0-2 and posted a 6.32 ERA in four rehab assignment starts with Omaha, after beginning his rehab assignment with Double-A Wichita, where he had no record and a 6.75 ERA in two outings. Wood has been on Kansas City's disabled list since July 3 due to back inflammation.

Omaha manager Mike Jirschele and pitching coach Tom Burgmeier also will join Kansas City's field staff for the rest of the season.

The O-Royals' Director of Broadcasting, Mark Nasser, is also getting a one-day call-up by Kansas City. Nasser has been invited to join Denny Matthews and Ryan Lefebvre on the radio broadcast of the Royals' game on Wednesday, September 6 vs. the New York Yankees. The pre-game show airs at 6:35 p.m. on Big Sports 590.
