Padres purchase contract of Jack Cust, recall three

PORTLAND, Ore. - The San Diego Padres today purchased the contract of Portland outfielder Jack Cust and recalled outfielder Ben Johnson, infielder Paul McAnulty and right-handed pitcher Mike Thompson.

Additionally, the Padres announced that Portland catcher George Kottaras has been assigned to the Boston Red Sox to complete last week's trade in which San Diego acquired left-handed pitcher David Wells in exchange for a player to be named or cash considerations.

Cust, 27, batted .293 with 23 doubles, 30 home runs, 77 RBIs, 97 runs scored and 143 walks in a team-high 138 games with the Beavers in 2006. Cust led all minor leaguers in walks and paced the PCL in on-base percentage (.467) while ranking second in home runs and runs scored. He finished fifth in slugging percentage (.549). Cust last appeared in the major leagues with Baltimore in 2004.

Johnson, 25, batted .263 with seven home runs and 22 RBIs in 51 games with the Beavers this season. With the Padres, Johnson is batting .252 with four home runs and 10 RBIs in 47 games.

McAnulty, 25, batted .310 with 34 doubles, 19 home runs, 79 RBIs and 76 runs scored in 125 games with Portland. McAnulty, who is batting .200 (1-for-5) in seven games with the Padres this season, ranked fifth in the Pacific Coast League in hits (148) and doubles this year.

Thompson, 26, was 6-1 with a 3.76 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 13 starts for the Beavers. In five previous stints with the Padres this season, Thompson is 4-5 with a 4.86 ERA in 16 appearances (15 starts).

Kottaras, 23, batted .210 with 10 doubles, two home runs and 17 RBIs in 33 games with the Beavers. Kottaras, signed by the Padres as a 20th-round pick in the 2002 draft, began the season with Class AA Mobile, where he hit .276 with 19 doubles, eight home runs and 33 RBIs in 78 games with the BayBears. Born in Scarborough, Ontario, Kottaras was a member of the World Team at the 2006 All-Star Futures Game in Pittsburgh.
