Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release

CARSON, Calif. (Wednesday, July 19, 2006) - Chivas USA today announced the acquisition of United States Under-20 midfielder Carlos Borja as a Developmental Player. A native of Orange, California, Borja played in the youth ranks of Cruz Azul of Mexico's first division, as well as club side Irvine Strikers (Coast Soccer League) before joining Chivas USA's U-19 team, coached by Chivas USA Director of Football Dennis te Kloese.

Borja is the second player, alongside Chivas USA forward Estuardo Sánchez, to join Chivas USA's developmental roster directly from the Red-and-White's U-19 squad.

"Chivas USA is pleased to sign a talented player like Carlos Borja, who not only adds considerable quality to our midfield and back line, but also exemplifies the opportunity that Chivas USA provides to young players here in Southern California," said Chivas USA Senior Vice President and General Manager Whit Haskel.

After spending time with the U.S. U-17 Residency Program in Bradenton, Florida, Borja joined the U.S. U-20 National Team (along with Chivas USA teammates Rodrigo López and Estuardo Sánchez) on a three-match tour of Argentina in April of this year. Starting in all three matches, Borja registered an assist against Arsenal de Sarandí in Americans' first game. Borja has also played for the Chivas USA Reserves, and is one of only three players to have played in all five of Chivas USA's Reserve matches in 2006.

Born on January 18, 1988 in Orange, California, Carlos Borja currently resides in nearby Anaheim. After participating with club side Cruz Azul Los Angeles in the annual Copa Chivas youth tournament in Guadalajara in 2002, Borja was invited to join the youth ranks of Mexican first division club Cruz Azul, where he played from 2002-2003. A former standout at Anaheim's Loara High School, Borja currently lives with his mother María (a native of Sonora, Mexico), father Manuel (a native of Chihuahua, Mexico), elder brother Luís, and elder sister Lilibeth.
