Cron pulls Barons off field, Suns named winners

Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

Birmingham, Ala. - Things got ugly in the Suns final game of the 11-day, 10-game road trip.

With the Jacksonville Suns leading 11-5 in the seventh inning, Matt Kemp was batting for Jacksonville and Birmingham reliever Edwardo Sierra threw behind Kemp, hitting him on the jersey. As Kemp walked toward first base, the Birmingham bench and Kemp exchanged words and both benches cleared for the third time in the night.

Following the pushing and shoving and a Chris Cron argument with the umpiring crew, the Birmingham manager pulled his team from the field in protest of the umpiring crew not disciplining any Jacksonville players. The Suns were declared winners with the final score 11-5.

The fracas began in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jacksonville's Spike Lundberg pitched over the head of Birmingham's Corey Smith. Smith pointed toward the mound with his bat and approached Lundberg, clearing the benches for the first time. After cooler heads prevailed, the inning went on and ended on a double play. With the Suns leaving the field, both benches cleared again with aggressive pushing and shoving at home plate. Following the incident Corey Smith was apparently ejected from the game, inciting another argument from Barons manager Chris Cron.

The incident in the seventh inning ended what was the best run output of the 2006 season for the Suns.

Jacksonville batted around twice in the game, scoring six runs with ten batters in the fourth and five runs on ten batters in the sixth inning.

Birmingham started the scoring in the third inning with two runs off of two hits and one Jacksonville error. The Barons' other three runs came from two hits and the second Suns error in the sixth.

Jacksonville returns home Sunday to open a five-game series against the Carolina Mudcats with the first pitch scheduled for 3:05 p.m. It's breast cancer awareness day at the Baseball Grounds, with the Suns sporting pink jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game. Proceeds from the auction will go breast cancer research. Tickets are available by calling the Suns box office at 904.358.2846.
