
Mendoza hurls Wilmington to victory

Woodbridge, VA--- The Wilmington Blue Rocks baffled the bats of division rival Potomac en route to a 2-0 victory at Pfitzner Stadium Thursday night. A two-run fifth inning was all the Rocks needed to earn their fourth victory of their seven-game road trip.
Wilmington starter Luis Mendoza (3-1) struck out seven over six shutout innings, allowing just three hits and two walks. He left with a two-run lead thanks to the bottom of the Rocks order.
Eight-hole hitter Jon de Vries led off the fifth with a four-pitch walk and went to third on a double by second baseman Iggy Suarez. Potomac starter Clint Everts (0-2) left with those runners on and no outs when southpaw reliever Tom Wilson surrendered an RBI sacrifice fly to Jeff Corsaletti and an RBI double to Bryan Pritz for a 2-0 Rocks lead.
The Wilmington bullpen hurled three scoreless innings to secure the shutout as closer Mike James earned his fourth save of the season and his third on the road swing.
Chad Epperson's club returns home on Friday to begin a seven-game home stand, with three against the Winston-Salem Warthogs.
First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with Wilmington's LHP Tommy Hottovy (2-1, 1.57) opposing Winston-Salem's RHP Lucas Harrell (1-0, 2.25). The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a David DeJesus bobble headdoll compliments of Dietz & Watson.
Game Notes:
Jeff Corsaletti went 1-for-2 with a single, two walks and an RBI sacrifice fly. He has reached with a hit or walk in 20 straight games to open the season.
Thursday's win was just the second shutout victory of the season for Wilmington and their first on the road.
Wilmington's pitching staff struck out a season high 13 men: Mendoza (7), Sturge (4) James (2).
Before the game Wilmington placed OF Jacoby Ellsbury on the disabled list with a strained right quadriceps and added C Matt Kent from Extended Spring Training.
