Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Calgary, AB. -- The Canada West Universities Athletic Association and the Western Hockey League are pleased to announce that forward DEAN BEUKER of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies has been named Canada West Hockey's HUSKY WHL Graduate of the Month for October 2005.

BEUKER, a 24-year-old Arts & Science student from Watson, Saskatchewan, becomes the first winner of the award in the 2005-06 season. The former Portland Winter Hawk and Regina Pat was a unanimous choice in the voting conducted by the seven Canada West Hockey coaches as he scored 10-9-19 in 11 games during the month. The Saskatchewan right winger received all six place votes that he was eligible for. (NOTE: A coach cannot vote for the player from his own team.)

BEUKER becomes the second player in Canada West Hockey history to win the award four times, matching the mark first established by Kevin Marsh of the University of Alberta Golden Bears. He previously won the award in February 2003, November 2003 and October 2004.

First established in the 1989-90 season, the Canada West Hockey's HUSKY WHL Graduate of the Month Award is now in its 17th season. The award is presented monthly to a graduate of the Western Hockey League who is playing on one of the seven teams in the Canada West Universities Athletic Association. Each monthly winner, between October and March, receives a cheque for $500.00 from the WHL to go towards the cost of his education and a gift from HUSKY.

Canadian intercollegiate hockey is a quality option for players who wish to combine both hockey and education. Close to 100 WHL grads are members of Canada West Hockey's seven teams in 2005-06. CIS hockey in general, and Canada West Hockey in particular, has allowed these players to further their hockey careers as well as their education at some of Canada's finest academic institutions. During the 2004-05 season a total of 53 former Canada West Hockey players were playing professional hockey in North America and Europe, including former University of Alberta Golden Bears defenceman Cory Cross, who was a member of the Edmonton Oilers.

The 2004-05 Canada West Hockey scoring champion continued his offensive excellence early in the new season as he tops the 2005-06 conference scoring list with 15 points in his first eight games. Scoring six goals and nine assists in October, BEUKER, helped lead the Huskies to a number one ranking in the CIS Top Ten with an 8-2-1 overall record and first place in the conference standings with a 5-2-1 mark.

Named the Canada West Hockey Player-of-the-Week in the final week of October, BUEKER began the month by being named to the all-tournament team as Saskatchewan won the championship of the 23rd Annual Golden Bears-Brick Invitational and then put together a nine-game scoring streak that saw him score 9-9-18 from October 8th to 29th. During that streak he registered five multiple point and two multiple goal games. Scoring goals in eight of the month's 11 games he netted three powerplay goals and one game winning goal, while also assisting on two game winning goals and three powerplay goals.
