Hawks knock off Tri-City Dust Devils 4-0

Boise Hawks News Release

PASCO, Wash. - A Sandy Almonte leadoff single in the eighth broke up a Boise Hawks chance at a no-hitter Sunday night, but three pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout as the visitors knocked off the Tri-City Dust Devils, 4-0, at Tri-City Stadium.

Donnie Veal and Ryan Chambers combined to fan 13 batters over the first seven innings, before Almonte blooped a ball into left for the first Tri-City hit of the night. The Dust Devils would eventually load the bases in the frame, but Nick Thompson would coax Phillip Cuadrado to ground out to end the threat.

A third-inning Jonathan Mota RBI single was all the Hawks would need, but Boise would add a run in the eighth on a groundout, then a Kyle Reynolds run scoring triple in the ninth to help the cause.

Veal went four innings, walking three and striking out a season-high seven. Chambers went a season-high three and two-thirds innings, allowing two hits and striking out six. Thompson got the final four outs for his second save.

Johnny Defendis went 3-for-4 with a double in the win, as Boise clinched a winning record on their Western Idaho Fair roadtrip. Reynolds and Mota each had two hits for the victors.

With losses by both Tri-City and Yakima, Boise moved to within three games of first in the Northwest League Eastern Division.
