Yakima Bears News Release
Spokane WA---The Yakima Bears contrived to blow a 9-2 lead with seven errors but rebounded to beat the Spokane Indians 10-9 in 11 innings at Avista Stadium Sunday. Bear pitchers set a season high with 19 strikeouts and allowed only three earned runs, while third baseman Lester Contreras made up for his two errors with a 4-for-5 night, including two doubles, a triple, and a homer. Contreras is hitting .365 with three home runs in the last 13 games.
Contreras turned in the game-winner in the 11th inning, as Juan Olivares singled with two outs and Contreras followed with a fly-ball double down the left-field line to score Olivares against losing pitcher Warren Rosebrock (2-1). Kyler Newby pitched the 11th for his first save.
Trailing 9-7 in the bottom of the ninth, Spokane tied the game when Joey Hooft reached on Contreras' second throwing error of the night. Catcher Taylor Teagarden hit the next pitch from Bear closer Chris Thompson for a game-tying two-run homer. Thompson (3-0) recovered to strike out four of the six batters he faced in earning the win.
Trailing 9-2 halfway through the game, Spokane pulled an unearned run back in the sixth on an Olivares error before tying the game with a Little League-style play in the eighth inning. Reliever Matt Krohe loaded the bases with nobody out but induced Joe Kemp to hit a groundball to shortstop. Olivares bobbled the ball and then threw wildly past second base and toward the right-field bullpen. Two runners raced around to score, and Jaen Centeno threw wild to home plate trying to catch the third runner, allowing Kemp to race home with the fourth run on the play.
The outrageous late-inning collapse ruined six phenomenal innings from lefthander Ryan Schreppel, who struck out 10 batters while allowing only one earned run in six innings of work. Yakima staked Schreppel to a 9-2 lead behind a pair of four-run innings, including three hit-and-run singles. Contreras and Brandon Burgess both contributed doubles in the third inning, with Burgess driving in two runs and Derek Bruce driving in another with a two-out single.
After Contreras led off the fourth inning with a solo homer to left field, his second in as many nights, the Bears got four more runs in the sixth against reliever Jesse Hall. Contreras led off with a walk, and Manny Del Campo followed with a hit-and-run single. Ramon Downing singled to drive in a run, and Burgess was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Trey Hendricks followed by stroking an opposite-field three-run double to right-center, clearing the bases.
Spokane missed a chance to tie for the East Division lead. The three-game series concludes tomorrow night at 6:35 p.m. at Avista Stadium, but the teams will then play a three-game series at Yakima County Stadium Tuesday-Thursday.
