Visalia Rawhide News Release
Late last season, after the Oaks had swept just one home series all year, Visalia Oaks employee Robert Koel, made a bet he won't soon forget. "Doc" as everyone knows him because of his resemblance to Doc Brown the wacky Doctor in the Back to the Future movies played by Christopher Lloyd, made a bet he won't soon forget. This was more of a permanent bet. Doc bet that with the way the Oaks were playing last season they would not sweep a series at home. He was right the Oaks did not. The bet became an ongoing one, and the first half of the season the Oaks did not win a home series either.
However, on the last home stand in which the Oaks were home for six games, Visalia swept the final three games series against the High Desert Mavericks, July 18-July 21. Doc lived up to the bet, which required him to get Oaks angry acorn logo (seen in upper left hand corner) tattoo. The other he put a nice size tattoo on his left calf. "I am a man of my word", said Doc who more than lived up to his end of the bargain by not only getting it, but had it done in color and in great detail.
Doc fell in love with the game at an early age growing up in southern California where he started playing ball and later became a big Angels fan, and has been hooked ever since. He continued being part of the game umpiring for high schools, colleges and even little leagues. These days he stays around the game by working at Recreation Park. As someone who worked in security his whole life before working the last two seasons at Recreation Park, he is secure with the fact that his favorite teams will always be with him. Doc now wears it proud showing his loyalty to his favorite hometown team. Although he was a little sore from the tattoo, he was feeling no pain remember there is no crying in baseball!
