Norfolk Tides News Release

July 4, 2005 - Syracuse left fielder Justin Singleton gunned out the potential tying run at home plate in the 9th inning, helping send the Tides to a 2-1 loss on Monday night.

Trailing 2-0 entering the 9th inning, Norfolk mounted a rally, as Tides catcher Mike DiFelice hit a one-out home run off of Syracuse closer Matt Whiteside to bring the Tides within one. Ron Calloway followed DiFelice with a slicing double just inside the left field line, and Rodney Nye followed with his third hit of the game -- a sharp single into left field, sending Calloway racing for the plate. Singleton charged the ball and threw a perfect strike home to former Tide Joe DePastino, nailing Calloway at the plate to preserve the 2-1 lead. Whiteside then retired Chase Lambin on a groundout to end the game.

Norfolk was just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position in the game and left eight men on base.

Jae Seo (6-3) was the tough luck loser for the Tides, as he allowed two runs on three hits in 8.0 innings. He began the game by retiring the first 17 batters, but DePastino broke up any thoughts of a perfect game with a double off of Calloway's glove with two outs in the sixth inning.

Since being optioned down from New York to Norfolk on May 9th, Seo has thrown 12 consecutive quality starts (6-IP, 3-ER or less).

The SkyChiefs scored both of their runs in the top of the 8th inning, taking advantage of two Tides' miscues. With a Julius Matos on second base and one out, DePastino singled to right field, and Ron Calloway threw home to prevent Matos from scoring. Calloway's throw hit the bat in front of catcher Benito Santiago and bounced away, allowing DePastino to advance to second. Anton French then followed with a ground ball to Tides second baseman Chase Lambin, but Lambin's throw to first was wild, allowing both Matos and DePastino to score and give the SkyChiefs all the runs they would need.

The Tides (46-40) and SkyChiefs conclude their four-game series with a 7:15 contest from Harbor Park on Tuesday night. Jose Santiago (5-4, 4.67) takes the hill for the Tides against the IL leader in ERA, Syracuse's Chad Gaudin (5-3, 2.19).
