
Pittsburgh Releases Indians Left-Hander C.J. Nitkowski

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Indianapolis left-hander C.J. Nitkowski has signed with the Washington Nationals after being released unconditionally by the Pittsburgh Pirates earlier in the day.
Nitkowski went 2-0 with two saves and an 0.83 ERA in 19 relief appearances for the Tribe in 2005. He departs after holding opponents to an .091 batting average against (6-for-66) and left-handed hitters to a microscopic .042 BAA (1-for-24). The 32-year-old yielded just two earned runs, six hits and nine walks while striking out 18 in 21.2 innings on the hill.
Nitkowski has worn seven different Major League uniforms in a lengthy professional career. His most successful big league season came in 1998, when the 6-foot-3, 200-pound southpaw went 3-3 with a 3.77 ERA in 43 appearances for the Houston Astros.
Nitkowski, who was taken by Cincinnati in the first round (ninth overall) of the 1994 June draft, also went 0-2 with a 5.20 ERA in six starts for the Indians during the 1995 campaign.
He entered the season with an 18-32 record and 5.35 ERA in 329 Major League contests and a 30-33 record and 4.01 ERA in 179 Minor League appearances.
